Under the patronage of the University President, Professor Tahseen Hussein Mubarak, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Administration and Economics, Assistant Professor Dr. Nizar Maan Abdul Karim, the Department of Public Administration held a guidance workshop entitled “Honoring Parents,” presented by Assistant Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Tayeh.
Parents are the secret to life, indeed life itself. With their contentment, life becomes sweet. Because they are the only refuge, security and safety for their children, they do what they can to provide a decent life for their children and provide them with the necessary and complete care, as their status is great with the Creator, Glory be to Him, and God Almighty recommended kindness and obedience to parents in many noble verses and noble hadiths, as He, Glory be to Him, said in His perfect revelation: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them but say to them a generous word, and lower to them [your] wing [of kindness].” Humility is from mercy, and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.” Allah made obeying parents one of the most important deeds by which a servant draws closer to his Lord. This is a reward for their efforts in providing a decent life for their children. The mother bore and raised them, stayed up late, and worked hard to see her children in the best possible condition and condition. The father played a major role in providing for his children’s needs and spent a arduous time toiling, suffering, and working to take care of the family. Therefore, Allah the Almighty has made it obligatory upon us to obey them in the best way possible, in a way that pleases Allah the Almighty, by speaking kindly and avoiding all actions and words that they hate. God has commanded us to obey our parents in accordance with obedience to God Almighty in all matters. However, when obedience to God conflicts with obedience to our parents, then obedience to God is obligatory upon us before obedience to them. We are not permitted to follow what they ask if doing so would anger God Almighty. Instead, we must be kind to them and treat them well in words and deeds.
The workshop aimed to introduce students to the etiquette of honoring parents, introduce students to the verses and hadiths that mention honoring parents, and instruct students that the pleasure of God Almighty lies in the pleasure of their parents. It also aimed to teach students how to honor parents after their death and to honor their friends.
The workshop recommended that students be loyal to their parents and acknowledge their kindness toward them. They should pray for their parents, seek forgiveness for them, be kind to them, respect their parents, and follow their recommendations.
