ity of Diyala, held a workshop entitled "Social Media: Advantages and Disadvantages and its Imp
act on Iraqi University Students," presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Karim Sayhood Karam
Social media is a double-edged sword. While it offers global connectivity and rapid educational
and marketing opportunities, it can also lead to addiction, social isolation, anxiety, and the
spread of misinformation and bullying. The advantages include fostering virtual relationships
and supporting businesses, while the disadvantages impact mental health and real-life family r
elationships.
The workshop aimed to identify the most important advantages of social media, namely effective
social communication, speed of communication, facilitating contact with friends and family aro
und the world, and forming new friendships.
Access to information and learning, as it is a quick source of news, knowledge, self-learning,
job opportunities, marketing, and support for social issues through raising awareness of impor
tant issues and supporting ideas and opinions. However, the negatives of social media sites are
addiction and wasting time by spending long hours that lead to neglecting daily duties.
The workshop recommended setting specific times for using these sites to avoid their harm, as w
ell as activating programs of general benefit through which skills and knowledge are developed,
and the necessity of continuous monitoring by the family and following up with their children.
