The Department of Statistics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Diya
la, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, held a training course entitled "Advance
d Statistical Methods for Dimensional Reduction and Variable Selection in Applied Studies." The
course was presented by Assistant Professor Wahab Salem Mohammed and Assistant Lecturer Arshad
Hamid Hassan.
The course reviewed the most important modern statistical methods used in dimensionality reduct
ion and variable selection in applied studies. It covered principal component analysis (PCA) an
d factor analysis, as well as variable selection models such as Lasso and Elastic Net, and thei
r role in improving model accuracy and addressing the problem of multicollinearity. The course
also addressed the practical applications of these methods in various scientific fields, demon
strating how to use them in statistical software and analyze the results scientifically and acc
urately.
The course addressed the importance of adopting these methods in applied research, given their role in improving the quality of results and increasing the efficiency of statistical models, as well as developing researchers' skills in handling high-dimensional data.
The course recommends adopting modern statistical techniques in applied studies and moving away
from traditional methods, while working to develop research skills to contribute to raising th
e scientific level.
